Etymology

'The people of Gār (a ),' a pet-name from one of the OE  names in Gār -. Cf. Goring (O) and v. Ekwall, PN in -ing 58. This pers. name Gāra is found in Garford (Berks), Garanford in BCS 761, 1055. An alternative possibility is that it is a derivative of OE  gara, 'gore or corner of land,' hence, 'dwellers on the gore of land.'
