Etymology

Flitteridge Wood (6″) is probably to be associated with Hugo de Flytteregg (1296 SR) of Barcombe Hundred. This is possibly a compound of OE  (ge )flit , 'dispute' and hrycg, hence 'ridge of dispute,' i.e. over which there was some quarrel as to ownership, cf. Tablehurst supra 329 and on þone flitgaran in a Wiltshire Charter (BCS 705). An agent-noun flīta , 'disputer,' is not out of the question. Cf. flitanhyll in a Beds charter (BCS 1229).
