Etymology

The history of this name is probably that given by Ekwall (PN in -ing 43–4) for Feering (Ess), viz. that it is from OE  Fēringas , with the same stem that is found in OE  fēre , gefēra .The vowel has been shortened in the tri-syllable, cf. Reading (Berks), with similar shortening from OE  Rēadingas .
