Jury Fm

Early-attested site in the Parish of Donnington

Historical Forms

  • le Jury 1535 VE
  • ate jewerye 1327 SR

Etymology

Jury Fm is referred to as le Jury in 1535 (VE) and must be connected with the Richard ate jewerye of 1327 (SR). Probably he came from the Jewry or Jews' quarter in Chichester and from him the land came to be known as le Jury , though the form is surprising, for we should have expected Jury 's Fm or the like. That the Jews of Chichester were actually segregated out here is not probable, especially as Jury Fm is away at the south end of Donnington, four miles from Chichester, but there may have been some Jews living here at one time.
