Historical Forms

  • Fugesham 1296 SR

Etymology

Foxham (lost). In BCS 208, one of the outlands of Bexhill is Fuccerham . This is probably for Fuccesham (the text is a bad one) and the place is the same as the home of Stephen de Fugesham (1296 SR) and the Fuxhame , Foukesham of court- rolls of Herstmonceux (1381) and Fokesham , Fouxham of court- rolls of Crowhurst (1461, 1463). For the pers. name we may perhaps compare fucges flodan (BCS 674) in Ha. It is immediately preceded in the charter by mention of (on ) gyllingan .This must have been the home of Clementia de Gillingge (1279Ass 914 m 13 d). The name is possibly the same as that found as Yelling (Hu), v. PN BedsHu 275.
