Etymology

Gotham was perhaps the home of John de Gotecumbe 13thAsM , Godecumbe , Godecombe 13thAsM , 1288Ass , 1369–85LibP . It is called Goth in 1430 (AOMB 56) and then Goteham 1507 Hailsham, Gottham 1563 ib., Gottam 1571FF (VCH ). The forms do not admit of any certainty of interpretation. The name may be 'goats' valley' (v. gat , cumb ), or 'Goda 's valley.'
