Nyton

Early-attested site in the Parish of Aldingbourne

Historical Forms

  • Nyton 1327 SR
  • Neiton, Nyton 1593,1611 SRS14,228

Etymology

In 1585 (SRS 84, 228) there is mention of a Neytyes in the same neighbourhood. This second spelling with Ney - suggests that the first element is ME  ey (v. eg ) with prefixed n from the common formula at then eyton . If so the name means 'farm on the well-watered land,' which would suit the situation.
