Etymology

The first element would seem to be an OE  pers. name Hlȳdi .Such is not on record but the unmutated form Hlūd is found in Luddesdown (K), hludesdun in BCS 1321 and (alternatively) hludesbeorh in BCS 741. Names from this stem are very common in Germanic names on the continent. 'Hlydi's well- watered land,' v. eg .
