Etymology

'Above the slope or hillside,' v. hliþ . The hamlet is really in the middle of rising ground. Cf. Bolinge in Buriton (Ha), Bouelingh '1235, Boueling '1248Ass , Buuelinche late 13th BM, Bovingdon and Boveney (PN Bk 187, 215), Boveridge (PN Do 100), and a place called Bouelithe (1349 Ipm) in Burpham (Sx).
