Etymology

This name seems to contain OE  nīge , 'new,' a form hitherto noted only in a few Sx and Ha names. Cf. PN Sx Introd. xv.Hence 'gate by the new wood.' The wood itself is probably referred to in Nywodeshacche , Nywode , Newode c. 1350Norfolk (a Shellwood manor document).
