Etymology

Hales Bridge is Halebridgg c. 1470Norfolk , Halysbridge 1534 LP, cf. also Hales howse 1576 SAC vi. These names are to be associated with John de la Hale (1225Ass ), de Hale (1229 FF), but one cannot say with certainty whether we have to do with a genuine place-name (v. healh ), or if John came from some Hale elsewhere, e.g. Hale infra 176.
