Etymology

Great Stoatley is Stodle 1202 P (p), Stottelegh (e )1325Ass (p), 1357 Swanton, 1359Ct , Stottele 1370Ass (p), Stotelye 1332 SR (p), Stotelegh 1340Ct (p), Stotley 1765 R, Statley 1777 A and D, 1785 Carey. v. leah . This is probably a compound of OE  stott and leah , hence 'horses' or bullocks' clearing.'
