Etymology
Phœnice Fm [fiˑnis] is la Vynye apud Aylyuehagh 1335AddCh , Vines 1571 VCH iii, 328, Phenice Farm 1765 R. This seems to be AFr vigne , from Latin vinea , 'vine,' 'vineyard.' We may perhaps compare Viney in Awre (Gl), found in the pers. name del Wyne (1248Ass ) and as Veney (1605FF ), Vyney (1629 Ipm). The alternative and older name appears as Ayliuehawe 1255Ass , Ayliuhagh 1307Ass (p), Eyleuehagh 1315Ass , and contains as first element the OE feminine pers. name Æþelgifu . For the second element v. haga . Hence 'Æþelgifu 's enclosure.'
