Etymology

Paulshott Fm is Palshod 1575, Palshedd 1590, Polshott 1672MinAcct , Polshot 1841TA , and probably gave name to William and Richard Palshute (c. 1500MinAcct ). There was a place in Chiddingfold called Palshottes 1484AddCh , Palshudd 1548LRMB , Palshud 1602Loseley , Pawlshudd 1632Harl which would seem to be identical in origin; cf. also the old name of Limbo Fm (PN Sx 117). If these names are all independent they point to an OE compound 'pole-shed,' 'stake-shed' or the like, from OE  pāl , 'stake.'
