Etymology

Newland Ho (6″) takes name from Niueland 1229 FF, v. nīwe , land .Chambers (8) says that this was a new borough created to the north of the old one because the latter was inadequate for the influx of settlers attracted by the market. The charter of this Nova Terra was witnessed by the abbey chapter and delivered to the communa of burgesses in 1215.
