Etymology

Burgage (6″) is le Burg (h )age de Southwell 1579, 1685FF , the Burgage lane 1614EcclComm , Burrage lane 1632 ib. Southwell was formerly divided into two parts, the 'Prebendage' con- sisting of the houses and property held by members of the Chapter, and the 'Burgage' which included the original market- place and the houses of the trading community. Until recently, Burgage formed a manor distinct from Southwell, and Burgage Green, which flanks the main road into Southwell from the north, represents its common pasture. Professor Tait notes the parallel of The Burgage in Prestbury (Gl).
