Etymology

Maythorn Cottages and Maythorn Mill (6″). Cf. Merethorn medowe 1466Rental , Marthorne 15thWhiteBk , Merthorne t. Hy 8MinAcct , 1612EcclComm , Mathorne 1636 ib. 'Boundary thorn tree,' v. (ge)mære. The boundaries of Southwell in BCS 1029 come down on þone norðran þorn immediately before they reach the river Greet, and this 'more northerly thorn' can safely be identified with Maythorn.
