Etymology

Kighill Fm is Kygell t. Hy 2NewsteadB , t. Hy 6Newstead , 1455 Pat, 1458 Inq aqd, Kigell t. Hy 2NewsteadB , Kigel 1205 Dugd vi, Kigil c. 1300For , Kyggell 1393AddCh , Kyghell 16th Dugd vi, Kygill 1602ForBk . Professor Bruce Dickins suggests that we may have here a diminutive in -il of ON  kuggi , 'small flat-bottomed ship,' with reference to a depression so shaped.Kighill lies on the side of Longdale Valley and this may be the origin of the name.
