Etymology

Hoppinghill Fm (6″) is Hoppynges c. 1490Survey , the Hoppinge 1602ForBk , Hopping Hill 1609LRMB . Probably 'place where hops are grown.' Elsewhere in the county we have reference to hopyards and hopgardens . For other examples of hopping in place-names see under Hoppingwood Fm (PN Sr 62).
