Etymology

The site of the abbey of St Benet is on the north side of the Bure, on Cowholm (1845 White 480, 1907 OS 6-Inch Map), v. holmr , holmi . St Benet's was founded by King Cnut c. 1020. For its early history, v. Holme II 190 ff. Very little of it is left, and what is left is not early. The gatehouse, into which an 18th-century windmill was built, is the most conspicuous of the remains. There are also fragments of the church (v. Pevsner 191).
