Etymology

THE SCALLOWS HALL, Scallow Farm 1781Tur , new erected Messuage or Tenement Cottage and Farm called Scallow farm 1784ib , Binbrook Scallow 1830 Gre, cf. Scalowe way 1577–80Terrier , Scallagate e17MiD , Skally gate 1662, 1679Terrier , Scalley Gate 1668Terrier , Scallow gate 1671Terrier (v. gata 'a road'), Scalla End , Scalla Nooking e17MiD , Scallow Hill 1740Cragg , Scallow Platts 1782Tur (v. plat 2 'a plot of land'). The forms are late, but it may be suggested that Scallow is to be compared with Scallow, PN Cu 407, which is taken as being probably from ON  skalli 'a bald head', used of 'a bare hill', and haugr 'a hill', a Scand  compound, and also with Scalawe in East Halton f.ns. (b), PN L 2 157. The hall is on the slope of a steep hill, and the suggested etymology seems topographically appropriate.
