Etymology

Pinesfield Fm (6″) is Pinnelesfeld 796 (13th) BCS 280, Pinesfeld t. Ric 1 (1301) Ch, 1303 FA, Pynesfeld c. 1275 Gesta, Pinnesfeld t. John Dugd ii, 1223FF , 1291 Tax, Pynnesfeld t. Ed 1StAlbansO , Pynsefelde c. 1460 Whet, Pinchfield 1753Recov . The first element in the name is a personal name Pinnel , a diminutive form of OE  Pinna . The name is not on record in OE  but is found in the Inquisitio Eliensis in the forms Pinna and Pinnae and in the strong form Pin in the Gloucestershire DB.
