Etymology

Dassells [dɑˑsəl] is Derkeshale 13th AD iv, 1287Ass , 1307SR (p), 1338Ct , Darsall 1545 SR, Darsalles al. Darksalles 1554CtRequests , Dassell 1658 Sess, Dorsell 1676 S. The second element is healh , 'angle, corner,' etc. The first is difficult. It may be the personal name Deorc , suggested for Ditsworthy (PN D 239). and found as Derch in DB (TRE), cf. Von Feilitzen 223. Less probably deorc might be an old name for the river Quin, cf. Dorking (PN Sr 269, RN 128).
