Haytuft Wood, the Hay Toffe 1559, 1565GR 421. The second el., which occurs in other local p.ns. like Tufthorn (215), Holly Tuft (222), Shaden Tuft (231), Tufts Brook (239), The Tuffs (246supra ), The Tufts (infra ), etc., is from e.ModE. tuffe , tuft 'tuft' used in the sense of 'clump of trees or bushes' from 1555; its origin is uncertain (v. NED s.v.). The first el. is probably (ge)hæg 'enclosure'.
