Etymology

Gurshill, Gerdeshull '1261FF , Yerdeshull , Ʒerdeshull 1303, 1346 FA, Zerdeshull 1349 Aid, Garshill 1559GR 421, Gersell 1578Bledisl 16, Gerse Hill 1830 M. Possibly 'hill with an enclosure' (v. geard , hyll ), but initial g - in later forms is difficult to explain; it might have been influenced by Welsh  gardd 'garden' or by gærs 'grass' (as in gærs- tūn) when the first el. had been reduced to yers -.
