Etymology

Nupend, 1723Kingsct 6, Upende 1639 Inq, occurs several times in Gl (ii, 194, iii, 154, 193, 250 infra ) and is clearly a shortened form of a ME  atten upp-ende 'at the upper end (of the village, etc.)' in contrast to Downend (infra ); v. atten , upp , end . Initial n - comes from a wrong analysis of the name as atte nupp-end (cf. Phonol. § 45).
