Etymology

Barton End, atte Bertonende 1327SR (p), Bartonend 1612Asht 5, 1642 Misc, 1764Kingsct 9, Bartning 1777 M. v. bere-tūn 'outlying grange, demesne farm', ende 'end of the village'. The barton is perhaps that referred to in le Cowrte Berton 1511MinAcct . On the form with -ing cf. Downington (41supra ), Phonol. § 14.
