Etymology

Brentry, Brenetre 1284 FA, Bourtre in Hemb ' (sic) 1287 Episc, Brenterry 1777 M; cf also the spellings of Brentry Hundred (126supra ), which is named from this place. 'Tree of Beorna' or, according to the suggestion of Anderson 34, 'tree of the warriors', though beorn (gen.pl. beorna ) 'hero, warrior' is largely restricted to poetic usage in OE. The pers.n. is OE  Beorna ; v. trēow . Some of the earlier forms of the hundred-name may contain -ing 4 or -ingas .
