Etymology

Poultmoor, Pountmor (e )1330, 1366 Ipm, 1380, 1414, 1459MinAcct , Poundemore 1494 ib, Poultmoor 1830 M. This could formally be a compound of OFr  pount 'bridge' (v. pont ) and mōr , but although there are a few ditches about it is unlikely on topographical and other grounds. It is possibly of similar origin to Poltimore (D 444), which Ekwall (DEPN) derives from an OE  pers.n. Pulta of obscure origin. The modern spelling suggests this; the Pount - forms, which are due to French influence, occur sporadically also in Poltimore and Poultney (Lei); cf. Zachrisson, ANInfl 127 ff. An obscure OE  pers.n. Punt (a ) is also possible (cf. Puntes pirian ii, 78 infra ).
