Etymology

'Beornmōd's glade or clearing' from the OE  pers.n. Beornmōd and lēah; the contracted forms are interesting in the fluctuation between Bernes - (the -m - in the contracted Bermdes - having become -n - before the dental -d - which was then lost) and Berdes -, etc. (with loss of the nasal); cf. Barnsleyhall (Wo 338) for a similar name.
