Etymology

Dittenham (lost), Dittenham , Dyttenham 1330, 1366 Ipm, 1494MinAcct , Duttenham 1448 ib, Ditenham 1459 ib. Probably 'Dytta's meadow', v. hamm . An OE  pers.n. Dytta is nowhere recorded, but it would be a mutated form of the OE  Dutta which seems to occur in duttan hamm BCS 757, now Dutmans (W 231). The origin of the pers.n. is obscure; it might be connected with OE  dott 'head of a boil' and dyttan 'to shut'. But it is possible that Dittenham contains the OE  Dydda which occurs in several p.ns. (cf. Didmarton iii, 28infra ); the strong form Dyddi already appears as Dit - in the 14th century in Dittisham (D 322).
