Etymology

The Tingle Stone, 1838TA , Tangle-stone 1779 Rudder 244. The name refers to a long barrow with a stone on top (156–882989); the first el. may be connected with ME  tingel 'a nail' (from the root teng -, ting - 'fastening') or the e.ModE. vb. tangle 'to cover with something that obstructs' (NED s.v.), in either case referring to a stone which obstructs the entrance to the barrow.
