Etymology

Longtree Barn, 1777 M, æt Langa treo 1052D (late 11th) ASC, Longetr '1309MinAcct , Langtree , Longtree 1379, 1453 ib. 'The tall tree', v. lang , trēow ; cf. Langtree (D 95). This place gave its name to Longtree Hundred (85supra ). It was here that Earl Godwin, who had land in this hundred (DB fol. 164a), and his sons Swein and Harold gathered their armies to fight against King Edward in 1052.
