Etymology
This name has been discussed by Ekwall (PN in -ing 50, RN 400, 409) who hesitated between a lost Tyrl -brook and a pers. name *Teorla as the source of the name. The new forms Tertlinces , Terdlinge (thrice repeated) suggest that a t has been lost from the name and that it is really an ingas- derivative from the OE personal name Tyrhtel , which would in Essex appear as Terhtel . The river-name Ter (supra 12) is a back-formation.
