Etymology

Newhall olim Dovers is Ne (u )wehalle 1298 Ipm, 1335 Cl, Ipm, Dovers alias Newhall 1520 LP. These references are assigned by editors to Dovers in Hornchurch supra 115. The family certainly held land near Havering (now Hornchurch) Marsh, but John de Dover witnessed (c. 1283) a deed relating to land near Harold Wood, quite close to Newhall, so that the family probably had land here too.
