Etymology

Ealing Bridge is Gildenebrigge 1045 (14th) ASWills, Yeldenebrygge p. 1350Rental , Zildebregg ', Zildebrigge 1351 Works, Ildenebrigg , Ildenebryg 1371 Londin (p). 'Guildsmens' bridge.' For a full discussion of such names v. PN Wo 124–6, and cf. further Gyldefordebrigge 1351Ct (in Great Waltham), Yeldbrigestrat 1368Ct , Yeldenebrigge 1372Ct (in Great Dunmow), Childebreg '1272Ass , gyldenbregge 1427, Yeldenbregge 1428, ʒyldenbregge 1437Ct (in Laindon), and Elm Bridge (PN Sr 230). Idenewellefeld in Harlow (1371 Londin) is probably another example, 'field by the guildsmens' spring,' and so may be Gildenecroft (14thTakeley ) in Writtle and Gildereden (1424 AD ii) in Rettendon.
