Etymology

'Skúli 's cottages,' v. cote . The OScand  pers. name Skúli is found as a surname in Richard Scoule (1297 LS, in Tharlesthorpe), and it enters into other place-names such as Sculthorpe (R, Nf), School Aycliffe (PN NbDu 8), etc. On the later spellings Scow - cf. Introd. xxxi.
