Etymology

'Fishes' stream', OE  fisc, genitive pl. fisca , + burna . “The village is scattered along a dry swell of limestone, considerably North of the beck which has given its name”, Surtees III 50. Identical with Fishbourne Isle of Wight SZ 5992, Fisseburne 1267 PNWt 49, and West Sussex SU 8304, Fiseborne 1086, Fyssheborne 1289 PNSx 70.
