Etymology

“A name derived from its deep hollow dene, where some remains of old elm-wood are still seen amongst the hazel copses”, Surtees III 53. OE  elm, genitive pl. elma , + denu . Cf. Adam filius Ædmundi de Elmedene c.1170 FPD.
