Etymology

'The herd farm', sc. of Sedgefield, OE  heorde-wīc. The 'herd farm' was probably that part of the manor devoted to livestock farming rather than arable farming, denoting the stables and cattlesheds rather than the barns and storehouses (often called the bere -wīc ).
