Eggelin and tūn (confused with dūn 'hill' in one 13th-cent. form).Dr von Feilitzen points out that this pers.n. is attested by OHG  Eckilin (Förstemann PN 29), and occurs as Eggelinus in 14th-cent. German sources and as Egelinus in England (Mauritius Egelini 1222 Domesday of St Paul's 30–2, cf. Reaney s.n.Eglin ). This is a post- Conquest p.n., for in 1202Ass (roll 1171) a third of this manor was recovered by Agatha qui fuit uxor Engelini (sic, m. 10, cf. the OG  pers.n. Engelin (Forssner 73), note the variant spelling Egelin in the same roll (m. 11)). 'The grange of Egliston ' is mentioned in 1325 Hutch3, and for the former chapel of St Margaret here, v. Chapel Cl supra .
