Etymology

Probably 'farm called after Pēof(a)', from the OE  pers.n. Pēof (a ) found as Peuf (a ) in LVD (Searle 388, Redin 34), and -ingtūn.The 13th-cent. form in B - probably shows confusion with Bovington in Wool par. infra . There was a mill here, claimed for the king's use, in 1086 DB (VCHDo 390), cf. atte Mulle infra . For the 'priory' here, probably only a grange, v. VCHDo 2118–19 and the f.n. Monks Bottom infra .
