One of several places named from R. Frome (v. RNs.infra ). William de Witefeld was here e13Salis , Hugh de Wytefeld in 1268Ass , John de Witefeld in 1285 FA; their surname may be from Whitfield in Lillington par. infra or some other place of like origin. The forms from 1329Ct show confusion of this name with Whitfield in Bradford P. par. supra , which belonged to this manor. Part of the manor was known as Holles Frome 1774 Hutch1, 1863 Hutch3 (named from Denzil Holles 1628 ib), which may also be identical with Froome Farm in manor of West Froome in Whitfield Eliz ChancP, the farme of West Froome 1641Ilch (so called to distinguish it from Coker's Frome supra ), cf. Hutch3 2410. There was a mill at Frome Whitfield in 1086 DB (VCHDo 3102), cf. Old Tucking Mill 1841TAMap (Fordington).
