Etymology

'Mill stream', v. myln , burna , cf. Milborne Stileham par. supra and the other Milbornes infra in this par. which are named from the same stream. There was a mill here in 1086 DB (VCHDo 397) and in 1501 Ipm, cf. Corn Mill infra . The affixes -St Andrew , -Androston and -Church (s )ton are from St Andrew's Church infra , v. cirice , tūn ; the name Milborne St Andrew seems originally to have been applied only to the S half of the present par. (RCHM 3 175, cf. Hutch3 2591, v. Deverel Fm infra ), and the southernmost part of this half seems originally to have comprised the manor of Milborne Church (s )ton (probably identical with Milborne Develish ) which belonged to Dewlish liberty (this settlement is perhaps represented by the medieval remains ¾ mile S of the village, v. RCHM 3178).Milborne Abbatston is thought by Hutch3 2 591 to have been 'probably the same' as Milborne St Andrew, v. abbod , tūn ; the latter was granted to Milton abbey in 934 (cf. also e15MiltRoll m.4r), and belonged to Cerne abbey in 16th cent (Hutch3 loc. cit .).
