Etymology

Originally a manor, probably comprising the N half of the present par., v. prec., RCHM 3 175, 179, cf. Milton Abbas par. infra . It was held by the family of (de ) Deverel (l ) (from Deverill W) from m13 (Elias de Deverel (l )m13 (c. 1447) Vaux , 1261 FF, Ed 2HarlCh , etc., John de Deverel (l )1261 FF) and by Thomas de Cary in 1340HarlCh , 1346 FA. Eyton 115–6 identifies Meleburne 1086 DB (f. 83a) with this manor, but this form is taken by VCHDo 3 102, 134 to refer to Milborne Stileham par. supra .
