Etymology

Park Fm (SY 391987), Park Farm 1843TA , Park 1811 OS, Lower Park Fm (SY 395977), 1843TA , probably to be identified with terram de la Parroc n.d. (13) Weld 2, atte Parrok (e )1327, 1332 SR, 1329HarlCh , 1376AD all (p), 'landby the bridge Atteparrok '1344 AD II, (la ) Parrok (')1412 FA, 1415HarlCh , Litilparrok 1438 Cl, Lytilparrok 1438HarlCh , Lityl Parrok (e ) in Mers (s )h (e )wo (o )d (e )vale , Lytell Parrok (e ) in Mers (s )h (e )wo (o )d (e )vale , Littil Parrok (e ) in Mers (s )h (e )wo (o )d (e )vale 1438 Cl, 1440 IpmR, from pearroc 'small enclosure', with lȳtel 'little' (perhaps referring to Lower Park Fm), atte(n) 'at the'. Cf. however other early references which may belong here to 'the park (s ) of Merssh (e )wode '1357, 1460, 1474 Pat, parco domini (de Mershwode )1505, 1510, 1519Weld 2, 'a park of the Kinges caullid Marsche Woodde '1535–43 Leland, parco de Marshoode 1576Poul , Marshewood Parke 1583SPDom , also Gt Park & Lt Park , etc. in f.ns. infra , v. park . According to Hutch1 1 327: 'Here were two parks, the largest of which was called Marshwood Park; the other adjoining to the former, called Brekelade or Crekelade park.'The latter is correct: it is recorded as 'a park called Crykelade '1430 AD II, 'Crikelade park '1460 Pat, Cricklake (sic)Parke 1583SPDom , the parke of Cricklade 1595Poul (no doubt a transferred name from Cricklade PN W 42).
