Etymology

Named from the River Bride which rises near Bride Head in Little Bredy par. q. v. supra . 'Long' from the elongated shape of the par., v. lang 1 ; the text in the charter of 987 (listing lands endowed to Cerne Abbey at its foundation) reads: in Bridian sex , in ulteriore Bridian duodecim (mansas ), referring to Little and Long Bredy respectively.Parts of the par. (including Dowerfield infra ) were in the manor of Ryme Extrinseca infra , hence landes in the paryshe of Langbredy reputed to be parcel of the mannor of Ryme extrinsecus 1569AD , and the 17th-cent. spellings cited.
