Etymology

'Lambs' clearing or wood', v. ēan (gen.pl. *ēana ), lēah , cf. Yeanley 327infra . The DB form duplicates the final el., probably a copyist's error, and the forms in Hend - contain an infixed -d - between -n - and -l - as in Handley 326infra , 1 98. The Bry form is either erroneous, or derived from one with the definite article prefixed. The lower farm at Eanley Wood is called Ashley Bridge Farm 1831 Bry, probably from an older name of Borrow's Bridge infra .
