Etymology

Murdishaw Wood [mə:diʃə], Murdishaw Wood 1842 OS, Murder Shaw 1746Chol , Mottershaw Wood 1831 Bry, Mattershaw Wood 1843TA , probably 'spokesman's wood', v. mōtere , sceaga , the first el. confused with murder 'murder' or exchanged for it after some unrecorded killing. The wood was at the boundaries of Aston, Norton, Preston, Stockham and Sutton, a position suitable for local assemblies. The place may be the origin of the surname Modershale , Modreshale 1333, 1339 ChRR, in which case the second el. is halh (dat.sg. hale ) 'a nook, a corner', confused with sceaga through a ME form *(-s )haugh from the nom.sg.
