Etymology

'south farm', v. sūð , tūn . Sutton is on the north bank of R. Weaver opposite Frodsham 326infra , and on the south side of the peninsula between Weaver and Mersey. The place is south of Norton 173supra , south-east of Weston 182infra , north-west of Aston 160supra . These four places are named from their position relative to each other, to Halton 166supra , or to the peninsula. Sutton Weaver (perhaps a contracted form of Sutton on Weaver ), is the name of the old L. & N.W. Railway station in this township and appears to be the official name of the township in the 1953 Index and on county council road-signs.
